Effective Starting Words in Wordle 2026 Based on Their Actual Performance

There is tons of advice on starting words that states few words and then concludes its mission. However, it is useless because the only criterion for the effective starting word is its ability to eliminate options rather than its ingenuity. Starting word should minimize the list of possible answers.

Why Elimination Is More Important Than Hitting

Novices usually evaluate the efficiency of the starting word in terms of the number of green and yellow tiles. However, it is wrong because elimination of five common letters via five grey tiles provides a significant advantage. Ideal condition after the first guess is elimination of most possible words with no hits.

Therefore, frequency of letters becomes crucial for the creation of an efficient starting word. In English, the most common letters in five-letter words are E and A. The next are R, O, T, L, I, S, and N. Therefore, guess of the word that includes several letters mentioned above is much more effective than rare consonants.

Best Words

SALET tops the list of five-letter words in all computer evaluations. It is a real word that means light helmet put under heavy one. It is rarely used in daily conversations. If you are ready to use it, then it is the best theoretically strong single starter.

CRANE, SLATE, CRATE, TRACE, and STARE are practically as effective as mathematically optimal starter. The difference between SALET and CRANE is one twentieth of a guess on average after thousands of games, which means that there will be no difference in practice. Choose the word you like and forget about it.

Starting word Structure Verdict
SALET 2 vowels, 3 consonants Mathematically strongest, but rarely used in speech
CRANE 2 vowels, 3 consonants Within one twentieth of a guess of the optimum
SLATE 2 vowels, 3 consonants Same class as CRANE, easy to remember
CRATE 2 vowels, 3 consonants Same class, tests the silent E ending
ADIEU 4 vowels, 1 consonant Poor choice, no information on R, S, T, L, N

They share some common features: perfectly balanced combination of two vowels and three common consonants. This combination provides ideal balance in elimination of two vowels, the most common ones, and consonants that appear in the majority of possible answers.

ADIEU Problem

ADIEU is the recommended starter in Wordle, but it is a terrible choice. The word contains four vowels and five slots, which makes it extremely ineffective because it provides no information on such common letters as R, S, T, L, or N. You know the composition of vowels but not consonants, which is a terrible situation for further guessing.

The same problem applies to such words as AUDIO and OUIJA. The words that have many vowels look very productive, but they just delay the solution of the main problem, namely the search of consonants.

Two-Word Starter Development

If you want to play systematically, combine your first two guesses and choose two words without common letters. Therefore, SALET and CRONY provide you ten different letters, including all vowels and most common consonants. After the second guess, you will narrow the set of possible answers to just several words and devote the third and fourth guesses to their elimination.

The drawback of this strategy is that you sacrifice an opportunity to solve the puzzle in two guesses, neglecting the information you already have. People that prefer to have low averages use this strategy; people that want to have occasional two-guess wins do not.

How to Test This

Theory about starting words does not matter, but practice does. To test several options, you should play one game per day, providing you with thirty data points per month, which is not enough to prove whether CRANE works better than SLATE.

Therefore, you need an unlimited version. Play as many games as you want at wordleunlimited.dev. In this way, you will be able to play twenty games with one starter and twenty with another one and to find out how often each of them leaves you with a comfortable position after the third guess. Moreover, you can change the size of the grid from three to seven letters, thus testing your favourite five-letter starter in various situations.

Performing this operation once, you will never talk about starting words again because you will have your own statistics.

Short Version

  • Choose a balanced word with two vowels and three common consonants.
  • Words like CRANE, SLATE, and CRATE are good and memorable.
  • Do not choose words with many vowels.
  • Evaluate a guess in terms of elimination rather than colors.
  • Finally, play enough games to transform theory into practice.
